Devastating Drought Is Imminent: Scientists Surprised to Find Colorado River Basin Drying Up Faster Than Expected
3/3/17
Summary:
More than half of the people that depend on the Colorado River Basin are taking much more from groundwater supplies than previously thought. The drought that is taking place is threatening future access to water. Certain states have lost over sixty-five cubic kilometers of fresh water, which is bad. People that live there don't know when they are actually going to run out of groundwater. A lot of water has also been depleted underground. It could take a long time, even up to hundreds of years, to refill the groundwater basins.

List Of Interesting/Important Facts:
1. Over the past nine years the basin, covering Wyoming, Utah, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, has lost some 65 cubic kilometers of fresh water, which is nearly double the volume of the country's largest reservoir, Lake Mead.
2. About two-thirds of water lost over the past near-decade came from underground supplies, instead of surface water
3. It can take hundred of years to refill groundwater basins.
4. The Colorado River Basin is the water lifeline of the western United States
