Facebook Moves One Step Closer to Light-Based Wireless Communication
10/6/16
Summary:
Tech companies, such as Google and Facebook, have been trying to find a solution to some people not having access to the internet based on internet connection difficulties. This resolution is using light to wirelessly transmit internet signals. The work comes from a Facebook- led initiative, which is called Internet.org. This has bought internet access to more than twenty-five million people. Since most internet signals are transmitted through optical fiber works, they think that using the light idea would be more efficient and successful. Researchers from Internet.org's Lab outlined a new type of light detector that can be used for free-space optical communication.

List Of Interesting/Important Facts:
1. Japan's population began falling in 2004.
2. More than 22% of Japanese are already 65 or older.
3. One of the first things Japan would need to do, says Kathy Matsui, cheif Japan equity stratuegist at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo, is make it easier for mothers to work.
4. Roughly 2% of Japan's population is foreign.
5. The 2012 government report said that without policy change, 2110 the number of Japanese could fall to 49.2m, just a third of its current population.

My Opinion:
I believe that Japan needs to find a solution quickly, especially because it is getting worse and worse each year. If there population continues to decline, there would be no one to fulfill jobs and to take care of the elderly. I believe adding more immigrants and increasing the fertility rates are practical ideas. At this point, those options are really the only ones that will cause a vast increase in population.

Greenhouse Gases Near Record 39.6 Billion Tons In 2013
Summary
Greenhouse gases were raised to a new record annual high of 39.8 billion tons. This is because of smoke stacks and exhaust pipes around the world. Even though that may have happened, there were also results showing that the rate at which people polluted the air may have be decreasing. These results showed that the United States pumped three point seven less carbon dioxide into the air in 2012 than in 2011. There were also results that showed that greenhouse gases were going into the air at rated sixty-one percent higher than they were in 1990. It was said that industrialized nations must have a global reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

List Of Important/Interesting Facts
1. The U.S. pumped 3.7% less carbon dioxide into the air in 2012 than in the previous year; Europe was 1.8% less.
2. In 2012 and 2013, the climb in emissions was less intense than in the past decade taken as a whole, said by researchers at Britain's East Anglia University.
3. Greenhouse gases were blowing into the atmosphere at rates 61% higher than they were in 1990.
4. India contributed 7.7% more emissions in 2012.
5. The world is on a course with current emission levels to reach a rise in global temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius or more.
6. In 2012, the largest contributors of greenhouse gases were China with 27%, the U.S. with 14%, and the European Union with 10%.
7. Americans still polluted the most by far, with more than 17 tons of carbon gas emitted per person in 2012

My Opinion
For greenhouse gases to be almost at the point of being at 39.8 billion tons in 2013, I know it has exceeded that level by now since it is 2016. For the U.S. and China to be emitting these gases so much, is ridiculous. It is scary that there may actually be a possibility of there being a global warming threshold and ending up being in the worst climate change. I agree with the researchers that we as a whole need to cut down tremendously on greenhouse gas emissions, so we do not end up having these problems. I also feel as though so much damage has already been done, due to our actions.

Forget Global Warming and Climate Change, Call It 'Climate Disruption'
10/21/16
Summary
This article talks about how most people continuously use the term 'climate change' and think that everything is okay. In reality, they should really be using this term as 'climate disruption' because of all the negative things that come along with it and that are predicted to happen in the future. People tend to have a positive attitude about the changes that are happening with the climate and think that it wont have an impact on the world in the future, when this isn't necessarily the case. The article also talks about how how greenhouse gases leads to global warming, but that is not the whole picture. In the future, they expect for there to be changes in precipitation patterns and sea-level rise, which will have much of a greater impact on humans and animals than the temperature alone.

List of Important/Interesting Facts
1. Temperature itself is probably not the biggest thing that we are going to have to worry about, about global warming.
2. There may be an increase in weather extremes.
3. John Holdren, the senior adviser to President Obama on science and technology issues, proposed the term 'global climate disruption' in 2007, in 2010, and in 2014.

My Opinion
I actually never thought of replacing the terms 'climate change' and 'global warming' with 'climate disruption'. I just never thought about it because I did not realize how bad this might actually be in the future. I also never put into consideration about how the precipitation and other facts are also going to worsen over the years, not just the temperature. In order to at least slow down this climate disruption process, I feel like we need to get the word out to other people about actions we can do to prevent it. Even though telling people about it is good, I also believe that it is kind of too late to try and completely stop it from happening.

Climate Disruption: What Do We Do Now?
10/28/16
Summary
Because of climate disruption, there are several serious threats being made towards coastlines, food, weather, and water. A scientist, named Darling, thinks that the cause of this climate disruption is due to the burning of fossil fuels, which emits carbon dioxide. They say that the carbon dioxide levels have increased up to forty percent in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution. Due to this, negative effects are happening. These effects include glaciers melting all over the planet, the planet is getting extremely warmer, and the methane that is contained in permafrost is being released since the permafrost is thawing. Some solutions that scientists have come up with were mitigation, adaptation, and geoengeneering.

List Of Important/Interesting Facts
1. The planet is most strongly warming in the poles.
2. A lot of the carbon dioxide that is being put into the air is also being absorbed by the oceans, which is making the oceans more acidic.
3. There are going to be more droughts and stronger hurricanes.
4. Oceans have been steadily rising by 8 inches, but it will be higher in the future.

My Opinion
It is shocking to know that all of there negative things are happening, and they will eventually even get worse as the future approaches. To know that humans are the main cause of this climate disruption is disgraceful. I don't think many people realize what they are doing to the planet as they constantly continue their harmful actions. I just think that we aren't going to stop doing this until it is actually too late, it may even be too late at this point in time.
